By Ben Renshaw - Director, Hills Performance Sports Physio

Physiotherapy, at its best, is a genuinely collaborative process - built on listening carefully, assessing thoroughly, and building a plan around what actually matters to the person in front of you. That's true whether the person across from us is a professional footballer preparing for finals or someone who just wants to get out of bed in the morning without a stiff, sore lower back! My name is Ben Renshaw and I started Hills Performance Sports Physio because I believe that standard of care should be the rule, not the exception - and that the Hills District community deserves exactly that.

Background

I grew up playing basketball, rugby union and any other sport I could get access to, which means I spent a reasonable portion of my youth on the receiving end of physio treatment. Time on both sides of the physio bed shapes how you think about what good care actually feels like for the patient. Alongside sport, I spent time coaching swimming at junior and elite levels, which deepened my understanding of high-volume, technically demanding training environments and the overuse injuries that tend to develop quietly within them.

My formal training spans a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science and a Master of Physiotherapy from the University of Sydney, followed by a post-graduate Master of Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy from La Trobe University. I'm an APA Titled Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist, a specific recognition in this field from the Australian Physiotherapy Association and the Australian College of Physiotherapists.

Clinical experience

Throughout my Masters program and the APA Sports & Exercise titling process, I was fortunate to gain experience working within the Sydney Swans and GWS Giants AFL programs, as well as an immersive period at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, embedded across a range of elite Olympic sports programs. Those experiences were formative. They exposed me to the rigour, depth of assessment, and collaborative multidisciplinary approach that defines physiotherapy at the highest level of sport, and set the standard I've carried into every clinical setting since.

Beyond those experiences, I've worked as a consultant physiotherapist for the Parramatta Eels NRL team, Head Physiotherapist of the Jersey Flegg U21s, and Head of Rehabilitation for the East Coast Eagles AFL club. I've also worked as a club consultant across a range of other sports, including gymnastics and local competitive swimming programs. Every one of those roles reinforced the same thing: detailed assessment, clear diagnosis, evidence-based rehabilitation, and criteria-based return to function - applied consistently, regardless of who the patient is.

A decade in the Hills District

I've been practising in the Hills District for over ten years, and in that time I've been fortunate to have rehabilitated an enormous breadth of presentations - stiff necks and persistent headaches, arthritic knees and frozen shoulders, adolescent growing pains, post-surgical rehabilitation, work-related injuries, and everything in between. The Hills community is one I know well: the sports clubs, the swim squads, the school sports programs, the lifestyle demands. That familiarity matters when you're trying to understand what a patient's life actually looks like outside the clinic.

Over that decade I've also built close working relationships with local GPs, sports physicians, orthopaedic surgeons and specialists, podiatrists, and radiologists across the Hills District and wider Sydney. Those relationships mean that when a patient needs imaging, a specialist opinion, or co-managed care, we can facilitate that quickly and efficiently - without the delays that come from navigating those pathways cold. Timely, coordinated care makes a real difference to outcomes, and it's something I've invested in deliberately.

Who HPSP is for

Hills Performance Sports Physio is for anyone who wants to move and function better, full stop! That includes competitive and recreational athletes, but it importantly includes people who have never played a sport in their lives and simply want their shoulder to stop hurting, their back to behave, or their knee to let them do the things they enjoy. The sports physio background doesn't narrow who we treat; it raises the standard we hold ourselves to for everyone who walks through the door.

Hills Performance Sports Physio is NOW OPEN at Suite 1.03, 320 Annangrove Road, Rouse Hill.

MOVE BETTER. FEEL STRONGER.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see you? No. You can book directly online or by phone. A GP or specialist referral is always welcome if you have one, but it's never a requirement.

What does "APA Titled Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist" mean? It's a post-graduate recognition from the Australian Physiotherapy Association, awarded to physiotherapists who have completed advanced training in sports and exercise physiotherapy and demonstrated clinical expertise in the field. It's a level of APA recognition in this sub-specialty, and requires both academic achievement and assessed clinical performance.

I'm not an athlete — is this clinic still right for me? Absolutely. The majority of people we see have nothing to do with competitive sport. Whether it's a long-standing back problem, a shoulder that won't settle, a knee that limits your daily activity, or headaches that have been present for months - this is exactly what we're here for. The sports physio lens means we apply the same thoroughness and attention to detail to every presentation, regardless of whether sport is involved.

What can I expect from a first appointment? A thorough assessment of your problem - your history, your goals, what you've already tried, and what's actually driving the issue. You'll leave with a clear understanding of what's going on and a concrete plan for what happens next.
